40mm Dedicated H-Alpha Solar Telescope
The LS40THa Standard Kit is Lunt's most portable dedicated solar telescope — a 2.6-pound grab-and-go instrument that puts serious hydrogen-alpha performance in your hands at the most accessible price in the Lunt range. Point it at the Sun and you are looking at the chromosphere in real detail, with a verified bandpass of <0.35Å that the competition at this aperture cannot match.
The front-mounted tilt-tuned etalon achieves 0.35Å because the optical path in a front-mounted system has fewer glass elements to broaden the bandpass — the etalon works directly with the incoming light before it enters the telescope tube. The result is a 40mm instrument that delivers chromospheric contrast comparable to what larger internal-etalon systems achieve only with double-stack configurations. Prominences arc off the limb in defined detail. Filaments trace complex paths across the disk. Active regions reveal magnetic structure that wider-bandpass instruments blend into the background.
It is worth stating directly: the LS40THa Standard outperforms the Acuter Elite Phoenix 40 on every measurable specification, while costing $360 less. The Acuter delivers 0.6Å against Lunt's 0.35Å — nearly double the bandpass, at a price premium. Lunt specifications are individually verified on a precision precision metrology equipment. Acuter specifications are unverified marketing claims. The Acuter has no viable double-stack option — independent observers have documented that DS attempts with the Phoenix 40 produce reflections and tunnel effects that make the result unusable. The Lunt LS40THa Standard is DS-capable from day one: add the LS40FHa double-stack filter at any time to bring combined system bandpass to <0.25Å.
At 2.6 pounds with the integrated 4" Vixen dovetail, this telescope is equally at home on a photo tripod at an eclipse site as it is on a permanent mount in the garden. The SunLock red dot finder gets you on target safely in seconds. The 12mm flat-field eyepiece provides 33x magnification for detailed solar views. The aluminum hard case with custom foam insert travels as well as the telescope.
