100mm Dedicated H-Alpha Solar Telescope
One hundred millimeters of hydrogen-alpha aperture changes what solar observation means. The LS100 Standard Kit delivers Lunt's largest dedicated solar aperture in a system built for serious, sustained visual observation of the Sun's chromosphere — at a price that makes 100mm accessible.
The 102mm f/6.5 ED doublet objective collects more than six times the light of a 40mm instrument, and aperture at this wavelength is transformational, not incremental. Structures that appear as soft textures in smaller telescopes resolve into defined, complex features: prominence threading and flow dynamics at the limb, filaments with multi-strand architecture and sharp dark cores, active regions revealing the full spatial extent of their magnetic complexity. The internal pressure-tuned etalon delivers a verified <0.45Å bandpass across the entire aperture — uniform, altitude-insensitive, and calibrated on Lunt's 1.5-metre precision metrology equipment.
Doppler True Barometric Pressure Tuning gives the observer precise, repeatable control over bandpass position. Shift through the H-alpha line in real time and watch chromospheric structures at different depths respond. The 19mm flat-field eyepiece provides comfortable full-disk views at approximately 35x magnification — the right starting point for any observing session. The 2" dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser with 10:1 fine reduction delivers the mechanical precision that 100mm of resolving power demands, and ZWO EAF compatibility makes this system automation-ready.
It is worth stating directly: the LS100 Standard outperforms the Sky-Watcher Heliostar 100mm on every measurable specification. The Lunt system delivers a tighter verified bandpass of <0.45Å against the Heliostar's 0.5Å. The Lunt etalon uses pressure tuning — sealed, altitude-insensitive, and free from the mechanical fatigue risks of the Heliostar's Trifid compression system. And the LS100 is double-stack capable from day one: add a DS100 module at any time to reduce combined system bandpass to <0.28Å. The Heliostar has no double-stack option — not on this model, not on any model in the range. The ability to upgrade is not a Premium Lunt feature. It is standard across the entire Lunt line.
The LS100 Standard uses a modular design — remove the solar module and you have a capable night-sky refractor. The doublet objective does not offer the color correction and contrast of the FPL53 ED triplet in the Enhanced and Premium kits, but it performs well for general lunar, planetary, and visual deep-sky observation. For the observer whose primary focus is the Sun, and who wants maximum 100mm aperture at the most accessible price point in the Lunt 100mm range, the LS100 Standard delivers without compromise — and already ahead of the competition before a single upgrade is considered.
