This is the standard stainless steel counterweight for use with HyperStar lenses on fork-mounted telescopes (also known as Alt/Az mounts). The weight fits into the 1.25" visual back that comes with the optical tube, balancing the weight of the Hyperstar and camera mounted on the front of the SCT. It is not needed with SCT's on German-equatorial mounts or on any mount where you can slide the optical tube in the saddle to achieve balance. Most commonly, this will be used with Celestron CPC, Evolution, and NexStar SE mounts.
Generally, this counterweight is NOT needed with the Hyperstar 6. The Hyperstar 6 and Celestron 6" SCT Optical Tube are light enough that balance can be achieved without the counterweight, even on fork-mounts.
Notes
The weight has a threaded hole on the back to allow stacking of optional extra weights for heavier cameras.
The weight itself is threaded, but it does NOT thread into the back of the OTA. The threads simply give the lock screw on the 1.25" visual back a secure ridge to grab onto.
