Fortunately, the answer is "No".
Computers advance at a fantastic rate. What was top-of-the-line two
years ago has less than half the capacity of current models! Digital cameras
advance very quickly as well, with larger chip sizes and new high-capacity
storage devices being released every few months.
Astronomical CCD cameras advance more slowly. The rate of this advance
has increased lately. But even so, older cameras are still popular and
work very well for most imaging. Even though the technology is improving,
it is not changing anywhere near as fast as computer or digital camera
technology, so you don't need to be quite as worried about your investment
becoming obsolete so fast.
New technology will always be making CCDs more and more advanced.
However, the same principle holds true for CCDs as for computers. You
shouldn't wait too long before buying for the next new thing because you will wait forever
since there is always a "next new thing" right around the
corner! A good CCD camera can last many years before being outdated.
It will certainly outlast your computer!
